Sixteen inches on center is the standard for most residential walls. Some non-load-bearing partitions can run twenty-four inches, but sixteen gives you better drywall support and more places to hang things later. We confirm the spacing based on what the wall is carrying.
You can’t tell by looking at the drywall. We check the direction of the joists above, what sits below in the basement, and how the load travels down to the foundation. If it’s load-bearing, removing it means a properly sized header, not a guess.
