Every spring, homeowners walk out to a driveway that looked fine in November. Now there’s a line running through it. Concrete is porous. Water gets in through the surface, through hairline cracks, and up from the ground underneath. When temperatures drop below freezing, that water expands roughly nine percent. You see it first as spalling, where the top layer flakes off in patches. Air-entrained concrete is mixed with microscopic air bubbles that give the freezing water somewhere to expand into. The Base Under the Slab Matters More Than the Concrete
Most driveway failures start below the concrete, not in it. If the sub-base wasn’t excavated deep enough or compacted properly, it settles. The slab loses support in that spot, and concrete that isn’t supported underneath cracks under the weight of a car. Water makes it worse. Poor drainage means moisture sits under the slab, softens the base, and freezes there too. That’s why a driveway can crack in the same place year after year even after the surface gets patched. The crack isn’t the problem. It’s a symptom of something moving underneath. Any honest assessment starts with what’s under the slab, not with what you can see on top.
Not Every Crack Is a Failure
Concrete shrinks as it cures, and shrinking concrete cracks. That’s not a defect, it’s physics. Control joints are cut into the slab on purpose. They give the concrete a planned place to crack. When joints are cut at correct spacing and depth, the cracks form under them where nobody sees them. When they’re cut too shallow, too far apart, or too late, the slab cracks wherever it wants. A straight crack that follows a joint line is normal. A crack that wanders across the middle of a panel is different. So is one where the two sides sit at different heights. That second kind is worth looking at.
Repair or Replace: How to Tell
Surface damage over a solid base can often be repaired. Crack filling, patching, and resurfacing all work when the concrete underneath is sound and nothing has settled. That costs a fraction of replacement and buys real years. Replacement makes sense when sections have settled to different heights. Or when cracks keep returning in the same place after repair. Or when spalling has exposed aggregate across large areas. Those symptoms point to a base problem, and no surface treatment fixes a base problem. The test is simple: if the two sides of a crack are at different elevations, something underneath moved. Resurfacing over that is money spent twice.
